This is the Subaru BRZ, which is perhaps best, if contentiously, described as Subaru’s take on the Toyota GT86 itself the long-awaited lightweight, front-engined, rear-drive sports coupé that has enjoyed what some would see as protracted pre-launch overexposure.
The contention would appear to be over just who is responsible for what in the two cars’ conception, design and development. In 2008, Toyota chairman Katsuaki Watanabe decided he wanted an affordable 2+2 coupé, but his company was already at full production capacity and its development engineers were flat-out working on other projects. As a result, the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ are, in fact, mostly a Subaru production.
Subaru’s BRZ project leader Yoshio Hirakawa refers to the car as “ours” and confirms that Subaru was responsible for its development, testing and production, with Toyota – a 16.5 percent share holder in Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries – taking the lead on project planning and design. To this end, Subaru has also built a new production facility for the car, near its main facility in Oizumi in Japan.
Hirakawa promotes Subaru’s version of the car as more focused at the enthusiast than the better-equipped (but pricier) Toyota. However, he admits that the differences between the cars are limited to wheel design, badges and interior trim.

I’ve never driven a Maserati before, so I didn’t know what to expect. Lovely car, engine is silky smooth and the interior is very special !
This car is a wicked hot hatch. It’s a different beast to the M140i I hired last year, very very quick, though you can tell it’s lacking a few cylinders via the sound it makes. However, the interior is a step up from the BMW.
Power and luxury all in one. I adored driving this for the weekend on a trip to wales. Had a quick blast round the evo triangle while I was at it. Grinning from ear to ear.
This car is something very very special. Sure you could have a laFerrari or a lambo, but nothing sounds anywhere near as good as the McLaren. This is as close to driving an F1 car as most of us will ever get – and road legally to boot.
It’s all about the performance treatment here. The SVR’s bodykit, specially tuned suspension and brakes, figure-hugging sports seats, quad exhaust pipes and bespoke 21in wheels make it look and act the part. We rented this for my sons graduation last year, and he absolutely loved it. Perfect gift for the lad after a hard two years.
This thing is a A 200mph super car that can be driven with ease, 4 seats and a huge boot. It can easily be a daily driver – very practical.
The LaFerrari is just an amazing vehicle. Simply stunning inside and out. They really have made something special here. The hybrid oozes power right from the get go and never lets up. A truly next generation hypercar.
I’ve never driven an electric car before so this was quite the experience. The “tablet” is HUGE that replaces the dash, but very useable and sensible at the same time. Power delivery was smooth, it never felt underpowered. Will be certain to take another extended hire before I change cars!
This car is such a classic, to be honest I do not believe it has ever been bettered. I rented the F355 for a week last year, and the Classic Parade team for first rate from start to finish. Definitely recommend using them to all of my friends and family.
Coming from an R32, the new R is a very different beast. There’s more power yes, but it feels a little more brute force than finesse. Still, Andrew & the team’s service was second to none, delivering the car all the way to cornwall for me. I think i’ll have to have the RS6 next time !
