When you’ve been making sports cars for as long as Ferrari has – and it was seven decades last year – you’re bound to have become quite good at it. Maranello’s 488 GTB is outrageously ballistic and joyously exciting proof of that.
The company’s pedigree in modern drop-top grand tourers like the new Ferrari Portofino is, shall we say, somewhat less convincing. It introduced the Portofino’s predecessor, the original folding hard-top California – its answer to the Mercedes-AMG SL63 and Porsche 911 Turbo cabriolet – ten years ago. But straight away it became clear that The Prancing Horse was dipping an elegant equine ankle into waters that couldn’t even be thought vaguely familiar, even with the existence of likes of the 575M Superamerica and Daytona Spyder nestled deep in its back catalogue.
The task was to reconcile opposing requirements by creating a car with the dynamism and excitement of an authentic Ferrari but also the versatility, refinement and convenience necessary of a car you’d use every day. To do it, also, in something burdened with the added mass and structural compromises of a folding tin-top convertible. Not easy. The company’s main reason for taking on the challenge, meanwhile, was that a really successful effort could probably double the breadth of the base of Ferrari’s sales volume pyramid.
But the California’s story didn’t pan out like that. Although the car was revised, lightened, tweaked and turbocharged through the course of its life, it never quite delivered success on that scale. While it’s very rare indeed for Ferrari’s V8 mid-engined cars not to hit 1000 sales in a calendar year in Europe, the California only cleared that threshold once. Time to take a fresh swing at it, then.

Coming from an R32, the new R is a very different beast. There’s more power yes, but it feels a little more brute force than finesse. Still, Andrew & the team’s service was second to none, delivering the car all the way to cornwall for me. I think i’ll have to have the RS6 next time !
This engine has been written about endlessly as being the last of a line, and the finest normally aspirated V8 and as such is to be enjoyed while it’s still possible to do so. I also love how the C63 estate looks, slightly more discreet than the coupe but still with a distinct look that makes it instantly recognisable to car lovers.
A great improvement over the original 2.0D X3 which I owned previously. The Michelin much improved – are a lot more Quiet & comfortable. Plenty of adjustment of seat and steering wheel Economical min 45mpg (2.0 diesel) especially considering the performance. Manual gear change good. Better than original X3 Good road holding and cornering – accurate steering. Relaxed cruising at M way speeds
We rented the shotgun as a towing/holiday car, as it tows our 1.2-tonne van in 5th gear without the need to drop down unless you’re on slower A-roads. On motorways it pulls the van very well and can power past slower trucks with the van unaffected by their turbulent air. The highest mpg I’ve got has been 40mpg at a steady 60mph drive down the motorway for 90 miles with just myself and 200kg of tools and tank of fuel, which is incredible considering the size of the car and it’s a proper 4×4 rather than one of the electronic systems that brings in 4×4 for a few seconds (like the Tiguan 4Motion).
Awesome vehicle great experience driving and great comfort for a sports car. Unreal performance and awesome looks. Interior full of all the conforts & amenities.
Best car I have ever driven. I used to own a Lamborghini Aventador, but the Ferrari is the best car I have ever experienced – this is something else. It is loud and fast when I want it to be but when I just want to cruise along it’s quiet and sophisticated. Would recommend this to anybody who wants a versatile super car!
Perfect styling in a contemporary requirement profile It just fits everything. A perfect all-round SUV for the UK. Spacious, great handling, great driving experience, comfortable and with a touch of regal image …. Unbelievable what this vehicle offers for noble predicates.
We hired the Lamborghini for my son’s graduation. He loved the attention he got by the ladies! We took a trip around some back roads afterwards, and he was beaming from ear to ear the whole time! In a way years he’ll be able to have a go !
Terrific piece of kit. Gorgeous inside and out. Well built with lots of clever little design touches. Hired a discovery 4 from Classic Parade before, and tried the Cayenne and the X5 before selecting the Sport. It is not quite as tight to drive as the Cayenne, isn’t as rugged as the Disco and doesn’t have the X5s technology – but what the touch screen does is brilliant. So there are cars that do things better than the Sport but couldn’t find anything that does as many things so well. Best features: amazing sound system (go for the Meridian up-grade), up-together handling, planted and stable off or on-road, unashamed luxury.
I’ve never driven an electric car before so I have to say I was not expecting miracles. But I have to say I have come away from the experience very impressed. Power delivery is smooth and refined, and although I miss the sound of a V6 or V8 in my ears, the torque availability makes overtaking a doddle. If there was one downside, I would say I am not a fan of the use iPad like screen in the middle of the front dash – it feels a bit much.
